Inclusive Choreography: Words and Movement Warm-up
In this webinar (first presented on January 16, 2019) Margot defines inclusive dance, outlines her class structure and then shows video of a favorite warm up. She also describes the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and communal benefits of dance for people with I/DD. Usually dance class is a silent activity. The teacher may provide pre-recorded or live music, but the dancers aren’t usually expected or encouraged to talk. In contrast, we find that adding key words and phrases not only creates a more stimulating artistic experience, it also helps strengthen our vocal command, aids in recall, and activates deeper breathing.
Rhythmic Body Percussion
Body Percussion can be simple or complex and it’s incredibly valuable in helping people focus and feel connected. In this inclusive dance webinar (first presented on November 14, 2018) Margot demonstrates body percussion activities that she uses in her daily classes. Brief body percussion breaks are a wonderful way to refresh and relax together. They are also a perfect way to build ritual throughout the day, marking time and special events.
